Ergologics tips for laptop users

Often employers or business owners purchase laptop computers due to their portability and convenience so they can bring their laptops to meetings, coffee shops, traveling, and the convenience to work from home. Unfortunately, the laptop’s compact design does not meet some basic ergonomic requirements. If not taken care of properly, one may experience pain and discomfort.

Due to the fact that the screen is attached to the keyboard, laptop users are prone to work in awkward and static postures (e.g., when the screen is at an ideal height, the keyboard is too high; when the keyboard is at an ideal height, the screen is too low). This can result in poor neck posture and/or poor hand/wrist position. When using a laptop, follow these general setup guidelines to reduce risk of discomfort:

  • Consider a supportive chair that fits properly and provides proper lower back support

  • Use a laptop riser or raise the height of the screen to minimize neck discomfort. “Ergo-Tip” do not place your laptop on top of a pillow, as the lack of circulation can overheat the computer and lead to discomfort.

  • A separate mouse and keyboard should be used, elbows should be position at 90 degrees, and wrist postion should be neutral and flat.

  • Take frequent breaks; it is important to stand-up, move, and stretch.
